Canvas is an hotel compound located in the Tulum peninsula in south of Mexico. The site, facing the beachfront has plain topography which houses natural tropical vegetation of palm trees and other species. Due to the client’s needs and specifications, the compound has to include a restaurant area facing the street, 10 to 12 rooms or villas and a public space of beachside lounge and pool. The program was arranged alongside a longitudinal axis that passes throughout the whole site from the street to the beach, referencing the mayan and prehispanic calzadas that organized their compounds. The architectural nature of the project is open to its natural surroundings, enjoying private gardens and ocean views. Also, one of the main intentions was to preserve a simple and monolithic construction of every compound building using natural materials giving light and shadows a principal importance, like a painting on a blank canvas.
